Drywall and texture repair that disappears

Anyone can fill a hole. The hard part is texture: getting a patch to blend into knockdown or orange peel so that nobody can find it afterwards.

Living room walls patched, textured and repainted before the floor goes in

A badly matched patch is more obvious than the damage was. A smooth rectangle in the middle of a textured wall catches the light from every angle, and no amount of paint hides it.

Texture matching is a feel job. It takes knowing the pattern, mixing the mud to the right consistency and knocking it down at the right moment — and it is the difference between a repair and a permanent reminder.

Included

What we repair

  • Holes — from a doorknob dent to a full sheet, backed properly so the patch cannot move
  • Settling cracks — corners and seams cut out, re-taped and floated rather than filled and hoped for
  • Nail pops — refastened to the framing, then filled
  • Water damage — once the leak is fixed, the damaged board comes out and is replaced
  • Texture matching — knockdown, orange peel, splatter and smooth
  • Priming and paint so the repair leaves finished, not ready for someone else

Find the cause before closing the wall

Water stains and soft board mean water came from somewhere. If that somewhere is still active, a new sheet of drywall will look perfect for a month and then tell you the same story again.

We will not close a wall over an unresolved leak. If the source is not obvious, it is worth having it traced first — that is a plumber or a roofer, and we will say so.

Small jobs are welcome

Two holes in a hallway is a real job, not a nuisance. A lot of our repair work comes from people moving out of a rental or getting a house ready to list, and those are usually done in a single visit.

Repair and texture matching, not new construction

This service covers fixing drywall that is already on the wall. Holes, nail pops, torn paper from removed anchors, corner bead damage, cracks, and water-stained sections cut out and replaced with a patch. It also covers matching the surrounding texture so the wall reads as one surface again. What it does not cover is hanging new board on new framing, moving walls, or anything structural. For that you want a general contractor, and we will say so rather than take the job.

The line sits there for a reason. Drywall repair here exists as preparation for painting. The patch is there so the finish coat looks right, and it is priced and warranted on that basis. If the damage turns out to be bigger than a repair, a whole wall gone soft from a long-running leak for example, that goes on the estimate in plain words instead of being skimmed over.

Most calls for drywall repair North Port and Port Charlotte are small in square footage and fussy in detail. A dozen anchor holes behind a television that moved. A doorway corner clipped by a moving truck. A hairline crack above a slider that reopens every spring.

Matching knockdown and orange peel texture

Florida walls are rarely smooth. Knockdown and orange peel turn up in almost every house from Nokomis down to Punta Gorda, and matching them is what separates an invisible repair from a patch that jumps out under a table lamp. Both are sprayed, thinned joint compound. The difference is what happens after the material hits the wall.

Orange peel is left alone to dry as it lands, so the match lives in the nozzle setting, the air pressure, and how thin the compound is mixed. Knockdown goes on heavier, flashes off for a few minutes, then gets flattened with a wide blade. Wait too long and the peaks tear. Go too early and it smears into a flat halo around the repair.

We mix and test on scrap cardboard held against the wall before anything is sprayed in the room, then test again. On older patterns, hand-troweled skip and stomp in particular, a knife matches better than a gun.

One honest limit: a perfect match on a wall painted a deep saturated color is unlikely. Fresh compound, primer and paint reflect light differently from a coat that has been up six years. When the color is dark, plan on painting corner to corner.

Find the cause before closing the wall up

A brown ring on a ceiling is information, not just damage. Around here the usual suspects are an air handler condensate line that has backed up, a slow roof penetration leak that shows after a summer storm, or a window head that lets water in during hard sideways rain. Patching over any of those hides the evidence and buys a repeat performance next season.

We do not chase leaks, and stain-blocking primer is not a repair. We say plainly that the source has to be found first, and hold the drywall work until a roofer, plumber or air conditioning company has signed off and the cavity has dried, measured with a meter rather than judged by eye. Painting a damp wall wastes your money.

Plenty of damage is purely cosmetic and safe to fix the same week. Nail pops from seasonal movement, hairline cracks along corner bead, settlement lines running diagonally off a door header, dents from furniture. Those get cut out, taped, textured and painted.

Mildew on a shaded interior wall behind furniture is a ventilation and humidity problem more than a drywall problem. It gets cleaned and treated before anything is coated. If the room keeps feeding it, no paint wins that argument.

How a patch gets built up in stages

Small holes take a self-adhesive mesh or a California patch and two thin coats. Anything larger gets cut back to sound board, backed, and set with paper tape in setting-type compound, the bag product that hardens chemically in twenty, forty-five or ninety minutes. Setting compound shrinks less and allows the next coat the same afternoon, which matters when humidity keeps air-dry mud soft.

Topping coats go wider and thinner than most people expect. A two inch hole finishes as a repair roughly a foot across, feathered until the edge cannot be felt with a flat hand. Sanding runs 120 grit, then 150, and 220 around the feathered perimeter. We sand with a vacuum-assisted head behind a sealed doorway, because drywall dust finds its way into every room in a house with a central return.

Bare compound then gets spot primed, every time. Skip it and you get flashing, those dull halos where the patch pulled the sheen out of the topcoat, and it shows up two days later in afternoon light. Finish paint goes wall to wall in the sheen already on the wall. Inside a larger interior painting job, the repair disappears completely.

Questions

What people ask about drywall & texture repair

Can you match knockdown texture?

Yes — knockdown, orange peel and splatter are all matchable. The finished repair should be invisible from normal viewing distance once painted.

Do I have to repaint the whole wall?

For a good result, usually yes — corner to corner. Paint ages, and a patch coated with the original can still read as a slightly different sheen. Painting the full wall removes that.

How long does a patch take?

Compound needs to dry between coats, so most repairs mean two visits across two or three days. Rushing it is how patches crack later.

Do you handle water damaged ceilings?

Yes, once the leak is dealt with. Ceilings take longer than walls because gravity works against every coat, and stained areas need a stain blocking primer or the mark comes back through.

Can you patch the ceiling before the leak itself is fixed?

No. A patch over an active leak fails, and the stain works back through the primer within weeks. Get the source repaired and let the area dry fully first, confirmed with a moisture meter rather than by touch. Once it is dry we cut out the damaged board, replace it, match the texture and paint. We would rather make two trips than warranty a repair that was doomed on day one.

Do you have to paint the whole wall, or just the patch?

Almost always the whole wall, corner to corner. New compound, primer and paint never reflect light quite like a coat that has been sitting in Florida sun for years, so a spot-painted repair reads as a bright rectangle from across the room.

On a flat white wall you can occasionally get away with it. On any color, or any sheen above flat, plan on the full wall.

The corner above our slider cracks in the same place every year. Can that be stopped?

It can usually be improved, not guaranteed. Cracks above a header or slider come from seasonal movement, and rigid compound will crack again along the same line eventually. We cut the crack out, tape it with paper tape in setting compound, and where it makes sense use a flexible patching product at the joint. If it has already opened three times, we will tell you up front it may open a fourth.

How bad is the sanding dust, and what do you do about it?

Fine drywall dust travels through the air conditioning system if nothing stops it. We seal the doorway with plastic and a zipper, cover floors, close the return in that room, and sand with a vacuum-assisted head instead of a pole sander in open air. It is not surgically clean, but you should not be finding grey film on furniture two rooms away when we leave.
